Credit Reports

To Obtain a Credit Report
You are entitled to one free credit report per year from each of the major credit reporting bureaus. For your reports call:

  • Equifax: 1-800-685-1111
  • Trans Union: 1-800-888-4213
  • Experian: 1-888-397-3742

Credit Report Inaccuracies
If you feel your credit report is inaccurate, you may be able to have inaccuracies removed under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. To have inaccurate information deleted from your report, follow these steps suggested by the Maryland Attorney General’s Office:

Write a letter to the credit reporting bureau clearly stating which items are inaccurate and why. Enclose appropriate documentation, and keep copies of all documents and correspondence.

The bureau is required by law to investigate within 30 days.

If the bureau cannot verify the information in question, it must remove the information from your report within 7 days. They must also send a written correction to you and anyone who has received an erroneous report.

The agency will notify you if they have investigated and believe their report is accurate. If you still disagree with the credit reporting agency, you may file a statement to amend your report. As a Maryland resident, you may also request a list of the parties contacted during the investigation.

Problems with Credit Reporting Agencies
If you cannot resolve a dispute with a credit reporting agency, contact the Maryland Office of Financial Regulation. Attach copies of any supporting documents to assist in the complaint investigation. Make sure to list facts concisely and include all necessary information such as account number and your daytime telephone number.

Both Howard County and Montgomery County have Consumer Affairs Divisions that accept complaints about businesses in their jurisdictions. They will also provide information about local companies.
